Why the March Kindness Challenge?

2/28/2017

Recently, I have been frustrated with how unkind my kids have been to each other. Since my persistent requests to “be kind!” seemed to have gone unheard. I decided that a game or contest would instead be the best way to teach and guide them. I came up with a March Kindness Challenge for us each to complete 31 acts of kindness, and I want to extend the challenge to you also. My daughter created a poster and I created tracking sheets you can use to track your daily acts, or you can just journal about your month of kindness.
Some kindness ideas include:
  • donating to your local food pantry
  • doing a chore or kind gesture for a loved one
  • writing a letter to someone who would appreciate hearing from you
  • connecting kindly with strangers
  • treating yourself like a best friend
  • picking up litter
  • paying it forward
  • etc.

Be creative and spread goodness all around you! Share as you wish; be sure to tag #spreadgoodness #marchkindness #spreadlove #marchkindnesschallenge.
Please join my kids and me in this challenge, as our intention is to spread as much kindness as possible.

The Zendoway Cubes are the best. I love to see the imagination of a child when given a cube; such as your son dance his way to happy!! I am a children's yoga teacher in New Orleans at The Wild Lotus Yoga Studio. Music, dance, art, and singing are a big part of our Bhakti Children's yoga practice. In my children's yoga classes I have been using the cube "I LOVE ME". This is especially great around the Valentine's Day celebration as well as for special Family Yoga sessions. The whole family can have fun with this cube and all of the other cubes. I like to use the cube in the beginning of class to introduce the theme and get the child's input. Discussion and activity around the "roll of the emotional dice" is a great way to begin a yoga class. The kids use their own imagination, feelings, thoughts from within themselves to to create the class they need and want. The cubes allow this to happen easily! I love this prop it has been a great addition to my yoga classes; most importantly the cubes teach me I think more than they teach the kids!! Thanks Kerry beautiful yoga from your heart to the hearts of kids everywhere, especially at The Wild Lotus Yoga Studio. We are Bhakti all the way!! Love and Namaste, Charlotte

These fun and family friendly progressive poses only take minutes each day. By consistently pairing these poses with saying the given mantra, you will begin to feel many physical and mental benefits take place.

Child’s Pose
This still and quiet centering pose is a perfect one to begin with. Sit back on your heels, slowly bring your forehead to the ground, and stretch your arms out overhead. Take a few deep breaths in and out of your nose.

Mantra: I am calm and centered.
Down Dog

Place your palms flat on the ground and step your feet back to create an upside down “V” shape. Keep your head loose and look between your knees. This is a great pose for building arm and leg strength. Kids love to hear how this pose lengthens their hamstring muscles and can make them seem taller.

Mantra:I am strengthening and lengthening.

Boat Pose

Balance on your bottom, tighten your stomach, and bring your legs up to make a “V” shape while maintaining a flat back. Try to move your arms slowly from side to side as if you are rowing a boat. This is fun for kids and wonderful for building good core strength.

Mantra: I am strong and balanced.
Plank Pose
This pose will work every muscle in your body. Hold that perfect plank position with your body while forming a straight line from head to feet. Try to hold this pose for 15 seconds. Squeeze your stomach and legs together to feel lighter. See if you can hold this pose for 30 seconds. Try to work up to a minute which is definitely an extra challenge!

Mantra: My body and mind are strong.
